Dryer safety tool
Dryer airflow risk checklist after a vent or heat code
Use this checklist when a dryer shows restricted airflow, check-vent, overheating, or repeated long-dry warnings.
Warning signs
- A restricted-airflow, check-vent, AF, F4E3, d80, d90, or d95-style warning returns.
- Clothes take much longer than normal to dry.
- The dryer or laundry room smells hot, smoky, or like burning material.
- The lint filter, outdoor hood, or area behind the dryer shows visible lint buildup.
- The outside exhaust hood does not open freely when the dryer runs.
Owner-safe checks
Do not do this as a basic check
- Do not run the dryer again if there is burning smell or smoke.
- Do not open the dryer cabinet while it is connected to power.
- Do not inspect gas lines as a DIY airflow check.
- Do not bypass safety switches, thermal protection, or vent sensors.
